Job description

Under the general supervision of the Captain and Lieutenant, this position performs general law enforcement work of average difficulty and responsibility in the preservation and protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, the maintenance of good public order, the enforcement of civil and criminal law, and other related duties as required by the direction or assignment. All assignments involve responsibility for recognizing the social importance of the law enforcement function, and for conscientious and effective performance of duties without immediate supervision. Incumbent exercises judgement and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations. Duties are generally performed on an assigned shift, but the deputy may be called upon to continue assigned duties or special work assignments on other shifts and/or at such times as directed to best fill the efficient and effective operations of the Sheriff's Office. Duties may be required to be performed in uniformed or plain clothes. Work is reviewed through personal observation, inspections, and by discussion and review of daily reports for adherence to prescribed methods and procedures.

 

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas of the County to preserve public order and tranquility, and to prevent and/or discover the commission of crimes against person or property
  • Makes arrest and testifies in the prosecution of law violators, conducts preliminary and/or investigations of the commission crime or law violations
  • Protects the crime scene, gathers and preserves matters of evidence, takes and records testimony: directs and coordinates activities on-site until relieved by a superior officer; assists investigators in specialized investigations
  • Transports prisoners to jail, prepares offense and case reports and investigate information for evidence for court
  • Serves warrant, capias, court orders and other legal processes, locates and arrest persons wanted on warrants or court orders
  • Enforces the traffic laws and arrests or issues citations and issues summons to traffic law violators, reports unsafe road conditions, directs the flow traffic when required, investigates traffic accidents
  • Participates in work involving juveniles, making preliminary and/or detailed investigation and follow-up, referring such cases as needed to Juvenile Investigator and Youth Court personnel
  • Participates in searches of buildings and large outdoor areas in an effort to locate law violators or missing persons
  • Assist in training of personnel

 

Qualifications

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be a resident of Tunica County, Mississippi or bordering county
  • Must NEVER have been convicted of felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history
  • Must be free of Misdemeanor convictions for at twelve (12) months
  • Must have NO previous or current charges of Driving Under The Influence of Drugs or Alcohol Beverages
  • Must be able to obtain bond, as required to perform duties
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi drivers license
  • Must have or able to obtain Certification from State of Mississippi Standards and Training within one (1) year of employment

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the application of modern law enforcement principles and practices
  • Knowledge of the importance of law enforcement work, the geography of Tunica County, its unincorporated areas and general roadway system of the County
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of Tunica County Sheriff's Office Policies and Procedures
  • Knowledge of first-aid practices
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations and performs calmly under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work closely with others as a team
  • Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise, and objective written and oral reports
  • Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with the public
  • Ability to recognize and understand the emotional and physical reactions of both victims and perpetrators of crimes
  • Ability to maintain a level of physical conditioning to be able to physically subdue, restrain, and apprehend law violators
  • Ability to meet requirements of periodic in-service training in all high liability areas (firearms, defensive tactics, tactical driving, etc.)
  • Ability to render physical assistances to victims and customers
  • Ability to adhere, at all times, to the standards and principles of honesty and integrity, and to keep your private life unsullied as an example to all
  • Ability to comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act
  • Skill in calmly and systematically eliciting critical information from individuals whom may be injured and/or highly emotional
  • Skill in the proper and safe utilization of law enforcement issued equipment, radio communications equipment and mobile recording equipment
  • Skill in firearms to be able to operate authorized semi-automatic handguns, shotguns, and/or rifles designated by the Sheriff's Office from a standing, couch, kneeling, or prone position with either hand accuracy, essentials for this requirement shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:; grip, stance, sighting under various lighting conditions, trigger control, body positioning, drawing techniques and loading/unloading
  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles in a safe and efficient manner in a law enforcement environment in day light and under the cover of darkness. Essentials for this requirement shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Ability to sit in a standard car seat
  • Ability to use right foot for operation of gas pedal
  • Ability to use right foot for operation of brake pedal
  • Ability to use column/console/dash gearshift
  • Ability to obtain a valid Mississippi drivers license
  • Ability to utilize standard vehicle emergency equipment, and ability to use mirrors for safe vehicle operation
  • Ability to properly identify colors utilized in descriptions
  • Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place
  • Ability to crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate and/or rescue victims or law violators
  • Ability to pursue fleeing suspects on foot both in day light hours and in the cover of darkness in unfamiliar terrain locations
  • Ability to use bodily force to gain entrance through barriers to search, seize, investigate and/or investigate

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

The physical abilities listed below are estimates of time spent during a typical work day to perform essential functions and responsibilities. Members in this position may be required to:

  • Sit up to eight (8) to ten (10) hours per day
  • Stand up to one (1) hour per day
  • Walk up to one (1) hour per day
  • Drive up to eight (8) to ten (10) hour per day
  • Occasionally lift up twenty (20) lbs.
  • Occasionally bend, squat, reach, kneel, or twist

 

EQUIPMENT USED

Requires the frequent use of patrol unit, radio (both portable and mobile), handguns and other weapons (lethal & non-lethal) as required, breathalyzer, telephone, calculator, cellular phone, copy machine, computer (including word processing and spreadsheet programs), fax machine, vehicle assigned to Administration, first -aid equipment, radio equipment software

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Generally work is predominantly performed operating a motor vehicle designed for law enforcement with protective cages. Most all activities are performed outside the Sheriff's Office and the employee must have the ability to tolerate weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, extreme cold, fog, rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Possible exposure to hazardous materials and conditions, toxic conditions, fumes, odors, vibration, dust, confined areas, animal/human waste and/or bodily fluids
